Taxation in France
Wealth tax on real estate (IFI) is due by private persons whose net property assets situated in France exceed €1,300,000 on 1 January of the tax year.
On the extent of this obligation:
- Taxpayers resident in France for tax purposes must declare all their property assets situated in France and abroad;
- Taxpayers not resident in France for tax purposes must only declare their property assets situated in France.
Net property assets are calculated on the basis of the current value of each asset after deducting the corresponding liability. The scale of wealth tax on real estate assets is as follows:

Between 0 and €800,000:
Between €800,000 and €1,300,000
Between €1,300,000 and €2,570,000
Between €2,570,000 and €5,000,000
Between €5,000,000 and €10,000,000
More than €10,000,000:
There are certain tax exemptions from the IFI, in particular:
- For people recently established in France as long as they have not been resident for tax purposes in France for the last 5 years;
- For certain assets considered work-related assets
